I was on the bus with someone a few weeks ago going on and on about the greatest that is Alicia’s Keys Here album, and he said to me: “Wow, it’s like the year of the black woman.”  I paused, and then replied, “Yeah, you’re right.”

And so it began.

2016 is indeed the Year of the Black Woman, and every other year afterwards will probably also be the Year of the Black Woman.  Here’s a list of incredible instances of black women slaying everything.

  1. Rihanna released Anti.
  2. Beyoncé released Lemonade.
  3. Gabrielle Douglass and Simone Biles were in the Olympics representing the United States.
  4. Simone Biles is the all-around, vault, and floor gold medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
  5. Simone Manuel became the first black woman to win an individual medal in swimming in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
  6. Michelle Carter became the first American woman to win gold in shotput in the Olympics.
  7. Ibtihaj Muhammad, a fencer who won the bronze during the women’s sabre event, was the first Muslim-American woman to compete for the U.S. in a hijab.
  8. Dalilah Muhammad became the first American woman to win gold in the 400-meter hurdles.
  9. Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali, and Kristi Castlin became the first Olympians from the same nation to win 1-2-3 in the 100-meter hurdles.
  10. It was confirmed that Zendaya will play Mary-Jane in the upcoming Spiderman movie.
  11. Solange released A Seat at the Table.
  12. Ava Duvernay released the documentary 13th on Netflix, and it was stunning and she slayed everything.
  13. Issa Rae’s hit show Insecure premiered on HBO and SLAYED my life every Sunday.
  14. Alicia Keys released Here.
  15. Simone Biles releases her book Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance
  16. The movie Hidden Figures comes out and slays.
  17. Viola came to slay in the movie Fences and is getting herself a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

These were the 17 examples of pure #BlackGirlMagic during the #YearOfTheBlackWoman that I could think of off the top of my head, but I am certain there are more!  What other instances did I miss?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
